Clearing up common misunderstandings about massage therapy.
Even though massage has become much more mainstream, many people still have misconceptions about what it is, how it works, and what to expect. This guide is here to help you feel informed, clear, and confident about what massage actually is — and what it isn’t.
Myth #1: "Massage is only for when something hurts."
Massage isn’t just for pain or injury — it’s also preventative care.
Just like exercise, hydration, or sleep, massage supports your body’s natural healing processes and helps prevent tension from building into something more serious.
Myth #2: "Massage has to hurt to be effective."
Pain doesn’t equal progress.
A skilled massage therapist can achieve deep, meaningful work without aggressive pressure. My goal is to work with your muscles — not against them — allowing your body to relax, release, and restore safely.
Myth #3: "I need a deep tissue massage to get results."
Many people confuse deep tissue with deep pressure — and they are not the same.

Deep tissue refers to specific techniques used to access deeper layers of muscle and fascia using controlled, slow, and focused movements.

Deep pressure simply means more force applied to the body — which isn’t always appropriate, helpful, or safe depending on your body’s condition.
👉 When is deep tissue necessary?
Deep tissue techniques may be appropriate when specific muscles have chronic tightness, restricted movement, or long-term holding patterns that require careful work beneath the surface layers. However, it is not automatically required for every client or concern.
In many cases, intentional relaxation work combined with focused care allows the body to release tension naturally — without aggressively forcing deeper layers.
Myth #4: "I should feel sore after every massage."
Some mild soreness can happen as your body adjusts, but ongoing soreness shouldn’t be your expectation. Massage should support healing — not leave you feeling beat up or in pain afterward.
Myth #5: "Massage isn’t for me because of my size, shape, or limitations."
Massage is for every BODY.
Every session is designed to meet you where you are, regardless of size, mobility, or flexibility. You do not need to “look a certain way” to receive care. My practice is inclusive, non-judgmental, and fully focused on your safety and comfort.
Myth #6: "Massage is a luxury or self-indulgent treat."
While massage can feel luxurious, it’s not simply pampering — it’s part of preventative care.
Massage supports your nervous system, circulation, stress levels, muscular health, mental clarity, and emotional well-being. You deserve regular care, not just occasional self-care splurges.
Myth #7: "All massage therapists work the same way."
Every therapist has a unique style, approach, and training background.
It’s important to find a therapist whose work matches your needs. My personal style focuses on relaxation-based work, incorporating deeper techniques where appropriate — always grounded in safety, intention, and long-term wellness.
Myth #8: "Massage during pregnancy isn’t safe."
When performed by a trained, experienced therapist, prenatal massage is absolutely safe for most healthy pregnancies. Every session is carefully tailored to your stage of pregnancy, your comfort level, and any medical considerations.
👉 In some cases, such as high-risk pregnancies, I may request clearance from your care provider simply to ensure we're working together to support your care plan safely.
Myth #9: "Massage during the first trimester isn’t safe."
There’s a lot of confusion about massage in early pregnancy.
While some therapists may wait until the second trimester out of caution or policy, when performed safely by a trained prenatal therapist, massage is not harmful to a normal, healthy pregnancy at any stage.
That said, if there are any early complications, we will always err on the side of caution and collaborate with your healthcare team if needed.
Myth #10: "Pregnancy massage tables with belly cutouts aren’t safe."
Pregnancy massage tables can be safe when properly designed, used, and assessed for each client.
I use a specially designed pregnancy cutout table that includes elastic belly support bands to gently support your abdomen while allowing you to lie face down comfortably when appropriate.

Side-lying positioning is always available as a comfortable, fully supported option.

Myth #11: "Massage is only for certain ages."
Massage is beneficial at nearly every stage of life — from children to seniors.
As long as care is customized to meet the client’s specific needs, health history, and comfort level, massage can safely support wellness across the lifespan. There is no "too young" or "too old" when handled by a qualified therapist who adjusts the work appropriately.
